On April 21, 2025, Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, took his final breath at the age of 88. With his passing, the Catholic Church and indeed the entire world lost not just a religious leader, but a global icon of humility, compassion, and courage.
As the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from Latin America, and the first to take the name Francis he shattered expectations and became a voice of the people. Pope Francis led not from a throne, but from the streets. His presence was felt in slums, among refugees, in prisons, and at the heart of political dialogues around the world.
His message was simple yet profound: love without limits, serve without pride, and lead with grace.
Mattese Lecque, like so many others, find myself deeply impacted by his passing. As a woman of faith and an author who has long drawn strength from spiritual guidance, I see in Pope Francis a reflection of what we can all aspire to become servants of hope.
Pope Francis’ papacy will be remembered for its inclusivity, his radical call for mercy, and his unwavering concern for the poor and the planet. He reminded the world that God’s grace extends to everyone, regardless of who they are or where they come from.
In his final moments, he remained true to his calling gentle, prayerful, and at peace. The Vatican now enters sede vacante, a period of reflection and preparation for the next chapter. But his legacy will not wait to be carried forward.
Let us honor Pope Francis not only in mourning but in action.
Let us forgive more easily, give more generously, and walk more humbly.
Let us continue the work he championed so faithfully.
Rest in eternal peace, Holy Father. Your light will never dim.
